| About Essential Oils... Essential oils are those essences derived directly from various parts of plants, trees, flowers. herbs, and shrubs via distillation or other organic methods that capture a plant's therapeutic and aromatic properties. Unlike dried or fresh herbs, essential oils are up to a hundred times more concentrated and powerful than the original plant. The four known methods of obtaining essential oils include Steam Distillation (the most common method because it produces the purest results), Cold Press (used with citruses), Chemical Solvent Extraction (used with botanicals in which the oil droplets are too heavy to distill) and Enfleurage - the oldest known method of extraction. * When inhaled, essential oils act on the olfactory nerves which connect directly to the emotional part of the brain, which causes one to react emotionally to aromas, sometimes even before the source can be identified. When applied to the skin's surface, the essential oil is absorbed through the skin and into the bloodstream, where beneficial properties are released. * Essential oils are safe to use with common sense. One shouldn't take oils internally (although this is a common European practice) and one should always take sensitivity into account. (Do your patch test!) Always use care with the very young and the elderly. * Essential Oils will last from 5 to 10 years, when properly stored. Many oils actually improve with age. Store oils in dark bottles, tightly closed, and keep in a cool, dry place. Citrus oils will last 2-3 years when refrigerated; if not, they will last from 4-6 months.
